Maintenance were duly summoned and he condemned the air conditioner so we were moved to a much bigger room with lounge attached. Five floors higher up so we really are living the high life.
First job today was a trip on the subway.
We went towards Ground Zero.
There has been a lot of rebuilding and we met a street vendor selling photo memorial booklets who eventually gave us a set of three for $10 and pointed us in the right direction.
They have made the bases of both towers into memorial fountains.
They have planned seven new buildings, some are already constructed.
Next we wanted to walk over Brooklyn Bridge and then have breakfast in Brooklyn.
Unfortunately we could not locate anywhere for breakfast and rather than trail around looking in vain we decided to go back over the river, but this time on Manhattan Bridge. This afforded us this spectacular view.
Manhattan bridge takes both rail and vehicular traffic and shook considerably every time a train went past.
This bridge brought us into Chinatown.
We didn't fancy a Chinese meal so walked to Little Italy where we found The Fox.
We had absolutely delicious sandwiches and two espresso cookies which were coated in salt and absolutely scrummy. If we weren't leaving for Washington tomorrow we might have gone back.
Finally fed and watered we set off for souvenirs for KM and Gracie.
Enroute we found ourselves in the Heartland Pub which has its own brewery.
I got a man sized beer.
Re watered we set off again and after miles of walking found the souvenirs in the shadow of the Empire State Building.
Finally a train home but.......
Alison had spotted a tramway on the map so off to investigate.
This is what we found.
We had to go on this!
It is a cable car link to Roosevelt Island which replaced the old proper tram service that used to run to it over The adjacent Queensboro bridge.
The tourist information lady on the island told us how the whole tram was placed in a lift and lowered from the bridge to the island.
Here are other photos.
After this it was finally time for home via Central Park.
In Central Park there is an area called Strawberry Fields and this memorial.
I'm now tired out, but I'm not the only one.
We are wondering what tomorrow will bring, just like John, we can only Imagine.
